Sunglasses can be divided into two distinct groups, Fashion, and Function.

Fashion brands are often Designer driven and offer the latest trends in frame and lens style, with a large range of styles and colours available. These products closely follow the Designer's main theme for the season, and are made to complement the prevalent 'look', and accessorise their current clothing ranges. The lenses fitted are usually general purpose filters suitable for regular summer wear. Examples include Chanel, Prada, Persol and Ray Ban. They are usually supplied with a fabulous case and packaging to enhance the feel of 'buying into a lifestyle'.

Performance brands have special features designed to appeal to more technical markets, such as sports use. The frames are generally more wrapped to follow the curvature of the face, offering greater fields of view and glare protection. They are often made of exotic, lightweight materials, such as titanium, which is corrosion (sweat and salt spray) resistant, and difficult to break. The lenses also benefit from advanced technology, often comprising several layers of different materials to provide higher levels of glare protection. These have lenses which can also be specified for particular sports, such as golf, tennis, driving, sailing, skiing and shooting. It is worth remembering that the visual requirements for, say, Skiing, are very different from playing Tennis, for example, and separate sunspecs may be preferred for each visual task. Manufacturers include Tag Heuer, Maui Jim and Adidas .
